This is a film about starting over, about the courage it takes to make change, and the things in life that are worth changing for. We meet Brutus and Lysette at the apex of stagnation; their love is deep, but after 600 years their life together has run its course. Lysette wants life to begin again, as Brutus languishes in depression and wonders what eternal life is really for. As Lysette embarks on her adventure, Brutus begins to find answers in the unlikeliest of places: by falling in love with a young human man.As I’ve entered middle age, and watched my mother’s body slowly succumb to ALS, and my father’s mind to dementia, I felt compelled to tell a story about the meaning of death. As the script for Twice Midnight emerged, immortality became a lens to examine what makes mortal life meaningful. Brutus asks his young human lover what it means to him to live a good life, hoping the answer may change his. In San Francisco, Lysette encounters the commodification of eternal life, as tech oligarchs use vampire blood to develop life extension technologies. Endless thirst for power, but to what end?Though often associated with death, in this film vampires are a vehicle for exploring the will to live. What shall we do with the time we are given? Where do we find meaning, beyond survival and the acquisition of power? When Brutus names himself a monster, it is not in reference to his vampirism, but rather to war crimes he committed a thousand years ago as a young human soldier. He has spent centuries trying to find his way back from moral injury and rediscover a purpose for being.Films that follow both members of a couple after they break up are rare, more commonly, one protagonist overcomes loss and seeks a new romance, as though conventional marriage is the only culturally acceptable answer to a life lived well. Twice Midnight is also among the few romantic comedies to center bisexual characters as a matter of course. It is a love story to be sure, but one that aspires to a less conventional, expansive view of love. Aristotle wrote that the difference between a comedy and a tragedy is that one ends in marriage, and the other in death. Twice Midnight ends with both- and neither.
